Take the next step in your skating journey. Fairfax Ice Arena holds its annual I.S.I. competition in May. Competition offers skaters the opportunity to learn choreography, the spirit of competition, showmanship, and great sportsmanship. The competition is platform for skaters to showcase their skating skills and growth, and introduce them to competitive skating.

COMPETITION

A competition is a great experience for a skater to showcase their skills and get feedback on their skating. By engaging with peers in a competitive environment, skaters develop lifelong skills like competitive spirit, cooperation and resilience which hold value both on the ice and off. Our annual spring I.S.I. competition is held on the first weekend of May with applications due on April 1. All levels and ages are welcome.

  • Competition schedule: A tentative schedule will be made available online, at the latest, one week before competition with possible scheduling changes up until  the day of events. We encourage all participants to check for any updates to the schedule online a day before your event.
  • Here are Fairfax Ice Arena's competition day rules, policies and information that competitors, coaches and their guests need to know before attending the competition days:

Etiquette

  • All competitors, coaches, parents, and guests in attendance at competition are expected to adhere to the fundamental rules of courtesy and good sportsmanship. Competitors or parents of competitors, and coaches are responsible for making sure their guests are aware of and understand all the rules and policies expected of them as attendants of the competition.
  • For the safety of all the skaters, throwing any objects (flowers, stuffed animals, etc.) onto the ice is NOT ALLOWED. If items are seen being thrown onto the ice, events will be stopped immediately, and judges along with staff will convene on when the ice is safe for skaters to perform. Event schedule will be impacted.
  • Adhere to roped off areas reserved for competitors, coaches, judges and staff. Follow directions from staff who are managing those areas to ensure that events are running on time, and be respectful to competitors and coaches who have those private spaces to help them focus and prepare to step on the ice to compete.

What to confirm and coordinate with your coach:

  • Music. Who will have a copy and back-up copy? Who will check-in music?
  • What time should you arrive?
  • What time is your group warm-up?
  • When you should have your skates on?
  • Where will you meet your coach?

What parents and guardians should confirm and coordinate with their skater:

  • Where to meet after your skater finishes their program event. Note that some coaches who have more than one student scheduled back to back, often ask their students to stay with them in the area reserved only for competitors, coaches, judges and staff until all their students are finished.

Before you arrive:

  • Parking is limited. Do not park in spaces clearly marked for customers in neighboring businesses. You will get towed.
  • Do not park or have your vehicle in idle curbside at the front entrance and at the circle. These areas must stay clear in case emergency vehicles need to arrive.
  • Professional photo and video cameras, long lenses, and tripods are not allowed inside the facility. Guests and customers found in violation will be asked to leave the facility and may be allowed return only without those items.
  • Large items such as bags, bins, signs, personal folding camp chairs are not allowed. Guests and customers found in violation will be asked to leave the facility and may be allowed to return only without those times.
  •  Unattended clothes racks and props found left out in the lobby, walking paths, and outside of your assigned room are not allowed and will be moved or may be discarded.

When you arrive

  • Competitors should plan to arrive at least 1 hour before their scheduled group warm-up time. Your warm-up time is before your scheduled event time. For example group 1 with events at 3 pm, may be in the same warm-up time as group 2 with events at 3:15 pm.
  •  Competitors should arrive dressed and ready with their hair and make-up done. There are limited areas for you to get dressed and ready with hair and make-up. Please confirm with your coach on when you should get your skates on.
  • When you arrive, there will be two areas that all competitors must check-in. The first check-in point is in front of the skate desk. The competitor must be present during check-in. You will be asked for your music and the pronunciation of your name.
  • The second check-in is to the left of the fireplace, near the cafe. Once you have checked-in at the second area, you must stay near that area. The second area is reserved for skaters, coaches, judges, and staff only. The area is for skaters who are getting ready to step out onto the ice for their warm-up and or their event skate. Skaters must leave after their group is finished skating and will not be allowed back in to watch other skaters, speak with their coach, ask their coach to take a photo, or check for or grab items they may have left behind.
